DIY Mason Jar Fairy Houses: Step-by-Step Guide for Charming Miniatures

Two of my favorite things are crafting with mason jars and creating fairy gardens. These Mason Jar Fairy Houses combine both into a delightful project!

A few weeks ago I shared how to make fairy houses from small yogurt pots. This tutorial shows how to make fairy houses using mason jars. You can use regular pint-size mason jars or smaller 12 oz and 8 oz jelly jars.

These mason jar crafts work well as projects for older tweens and teens. When finished, each person will have a charming fairy or gnome house to take home.

Use them as centerpieces for a fairy-themed birthday, create witch houses for Halloween, or make a single fairy house as a night light for a child. This post contains affiliate links.

How to Make Light-Up Fairy House Mason Jars

Supplies

  • Pint-size mason jars OR 8 oz or 12 oz jelly jars
  • Two felt sheets (approximately 11.7 x 8.3 inches)
  • One sheet of cardstock
  • Flickering LED lights
  • Embellishments such as stickers, trims, ribbons, and moss
  • Hot glue gun and glue sticks
  • Sharpie marker
  • Mason Jar Fairy Houses – pattern pieces (printable)

Directions

Begin by cutting out the pattern pieces. Use one felt sheet to cut the roof and the second sheet for the rectangular house wrap. Cut the rectangle to the size that fits your jar:

  • 8 oz jelly jar – 2.5 inches x 9 inches
  • 12 oz jelly jar – 4.5 inches x 9 inches
  • Regular pint-size mason jar – 4.5 inches x 11 inches

In the center of the house rectangle, cut out a doorway. Optionally cut windows on either side of the door; placing one window slightly higher than the other creates the illusion of stairs. Trace around the doorway and windows with a Sharpie for definition—this looks especially nice when the jar is lit from within.

Assemble the Mason Jar Fairy Houses

Putting the outer house onto the mason jar.

Wrap the felt house piece around the jar and secure it with hot glue along the seam. Keep decorations simple or embellish generously—stickers, trims, and small bits of faux moss all work well. Dimensional stickers such as mushrooms, flowers, or ivy add charm; glue them in place with the hot glue gun.

Hot-gluing small patches of moss around the base and sides of the jar creates a rustic, lived-in look. Once the body of the house is decorated, set it aside and prepare the roof.

Make the Roof

The lid ring used for these jars is the same across sizes, so the roof pattern will fit all jars. After cutting the roof piece from felt, draw a glue line about 1 inch above the bottom edge and begin wrapping the felt around the metal ring, gluing as you go.

Glue the seam carefully. Before sealing the top, add a small dab of glue and fold the pointed tip of the felt inward, then glue the roof closed at the top. Add stickers, ribbon, or trim to the roof for extra detail. The roof should fit snugly over the jar lip but does not need to be glued down—this allows easy access to the interior to turn lights on and off.

Light Up the Fairy House

Flickering LED lights work especially well because the subtle, irregular glow feels cozy and magical. Drop a flickering LED light into the jar and place the felt roof on top. When you want to turn the light off, simply remove the roof to access the switch.

Turn Fairy Houses into Haunted Houses for Halloween

If you enjoy this project, consider adapting it for Halloween. With darker colors, spooky stickers, and eerie embellishments, these jars transform into haunted witch and monster houses. They make striking mantel decorations or Halloween party centerpieces.
