~ Welcome to Crash Course Cooking! I’ve been cooking since I was a little kid, but it’s time to up my game … and I want you to join me! ~
Hey, guys! Amy here.
With the New Year and new resolutions, it felt like the perfect time to start a fresh cooking adventure—and I want you to come along. My goal is to become a better, faster, more confident cook: healthier and happier in the kitchen.
Why Crash Course Cooking?
I’ve noticed there are a lot of people who truly don’t know where to begin with cooking. I was surprised, since cooking is such a routine at my house, but it reminded me that not everyone grows up around kitchens.
(That’s me when I was five.)
Most people want to cook. It saves money and calories, and it feels great to share a homemade meal with someone special. But getting started can be intimidating when recipes use unfamiliar terms like sauté or allumette.
You don’t need to understand every culinary term to be a great cook. You just need a starting point and the confidence to practice. That’s what this series is about—simple, real-world answers to the questions that stop people from trying.
Why I Want to Learn More
I’m fortunate to have grown up in a kitchen, testing recipes and gardening with my family, which gave me a lot of hands-on experience. Still, I often feel like there are gaps in my knowledge—small but useful things like culinary vocabulary and measurement conversions.
Even with years of kitchen time and gardening experience, I still occasionally call up the stairs asking, “Mom, what does this mean?” I’m heading to college soon and want to feel prepared when I can’t just walk upstairs for help.
That’s another reason I’m launching this series: to learn more and to help others learn with me. We’ll fill in the basics—how to measure, how to read recipes, and how to pick up useful skills that make cooking less intimidating.
The Not-So-Big Secret …
Here’s a little secret chefs don’t make mysterious: most basic culinary skills are easy to learn. With a few fundamentals and perhaps a short video tutorial, you can make a wide range of dishes. That’s empowering and fun.
So Let’s Resolve to Do This Together!
One of my New Year’s resolutions is to become a better cook and to help others get started. I’m taking a Culinary Fundamentals class this semester to sharpen knife skills, learn useful vocabulary, and pick up reliable techniques. I’ll share what I learn as we go.
I’m not an expert, and we’ll learn together. But I do have a few helpful tricks and lots of enthusiasm to share.
- Tips for busy parents who want quick, homemade options instead of store-bought party food.
- Ideas for college students who know there’s more than ramen out there.
- Simple recipes and techniques for teens who want to make snacks after school.
- Practical guidance for anyone who wants to enjoy cooking more and improve step by step.
I’ll share tried-and-true tips, insights from others, and new things I learn in class. My aim is to give you knowledge and confidence so you can keep building your skills.
Repeat after me: all a good cook needs is a starting point. Stick with me and I’ll help you find yours.
Welcome to my new post series: Crash Course Cooking.
