Constellation Necklaces
I just finished another round of crafts at YW Camp. One of the most popular activities this year was making constellation necklaces. The camp theme was “Trust in the Lord and Look Up,” so projects featuring stars, galaxies, and constellations fit perfectly.
Though my zodiac sign is Aries and I don’t take astrology too seriously, I love the idea of constellations—how star patterns change with the seasons and how each person can be linked to a particular pattern. Metal stamping can sometimes be tricky for beginners, especially with letter or word stamping, but this project was straightforward and kid-friendly.

At camp about 100 girls, ages 11–18, came through my station and nearly everyone completed a necklace with ease. Only one needed a replacement tag. The success comes down to three things: the stamps are small, the metal blanks are soft, and we used sticker templates. Those elements removed most of the guesswork.

Stamped Constellation Necklace Supplies
Stamping supplies can be expensive, but there are budget-friendly ways to run this project for a group. Here are the items I used and tips to save money.

Constellation sticker and stamp kit: This kit includes the small metal stamps and the sticker templates. The kit does not include metal blanks. Prices can vary, so look for a reasonable price when buying. Each kit contains stamps and six stickers for each zodiac constellation in three sizes (small, medium, large).
I bought 1¼” round stamping blanks to accommodate the largest sticker size so any sticker from the pack would fit. The girls chose which constellation and which sticker size they wanted to use.

Hammers and stamping surfaces: Jewelry hammers and dedicated stamping blocks are pricey for large groups. Instead, I bought small 8 oz. hammers and used small cutting boards as a work surface. They work well, are affordable, and are easy to replace if needed.

Metal blanks, jump rings, and chains: Not all metal blanks are suitable for stamping. Use soft-strike aluminum blanks designed for stamping; they take an impression with just one or two hammer hits. Inexpensive ball chains work fine for finishing the necklaces and keep costs down.

Are Constellation Necklaces Easy to Make?
Yes — absolutely! These necklaces take about five minutes to make from start to finish. The sticker templates guide placement, the soft metal blanks accept impressions easily, and the stamping process is quick.

Once the constellation is stamped, add a jump ring and thread the tag onto a chain.

Equipment
- (see Materials list)
Materials
- Constellation stamp kit (includes template stickers and metal stamps)
- Small cutting board or stamping block
- Masking tape
- 1¼” round aluminum dog tag blanks
- Small hammer (8 oz. works well)
- Jewelry enamel marker (for coloring stamped impressions)
- Paper towel
- Jewelry pliers
- Jump rings
- Ball chain necklace
Instructions
- Select the constellation sticker you want from the template pack. Each pack includes three sticker sizes; 1¼” blanks will fit them all.
- Place the chosen sticker on the dog tag and secure the tag to the cutting board with a small piece of masking tape to keep it steady.
- Find the matching metal stamps from the kit (most kits include dot stamps and small and large sunburst stamps).
- Use the stamps to indent the metal tag by striking them with the hammer. One or two firm hits are usually enough.
- When stamping is complete, peel the sticker off the tag.
- Trace over the stamped impressions with a jewelry enamel marker and wait about 30 seconds.
- Wipe the surface clean with a paper towel—the ink in the stamped grooves will remain and will make the constellation stand out.
- Add a jump ring to the dog tag and thread it onto a chain or keyring.
- Enjoy your finished constellation necklace!
Notes
- The kit includes six stickers per constellation in three sizes. A 1¼” round blank fits all sizes.
- Kits include only a few metal stamps, so order extra sets if you’re working with a large group.
- Use soft-strike aluminum blanks for easy stamping — impressions form with one or two hammer hits.
- To save money, buy small hammers and use cutting boards as stamping surfaces instead of specialized tools.
