Baked figs appetizer full of flavour
This simple appetizer is a delightful balance of sweet and savory. Roasted walnuts add a pleasant crunch, a drizzle of honey intensifies the figs’ natural sweetness, and warm goat cheese lends a creamy contrast. It’s an easy, impressive starter that melts in your mouth.
My first experience with figs was on the Greek island of Crete, tasting fruit straight from the tree. Fresh-picked figs are far sweeter and more aromatic than supermarket fruit. If you ever have the chance to try them freshly harvested, don’t miss it.

Easy fig appetizer done in 15 minutes
One of the best things about this recipe is how fast it comes together. From prep to oven it takes about 15 minutes, so you can finish it right before guests arrive and serve warm figs straight from the baking dish. It’s a small, elegant show-stopper for any gathering.
Ingredients needed
- Fresh figs
- Soft goat cheese
- Walnuts (or other nuts)
- Fresh mini basil
- Honey
- Baguette, to serve
- Salt and pepper
- Small baking dish
How to make baked figs with goat cheese
Cut the figs. Wash and dry the figs, then trim off the stems. Make an X-shaped cut at the top of each fig, cutting about three quarters of the way through—don’t cut all the way through.
Fill the figs. Gently spoon about one teaspoon of goat cheese into each fig, taking care with very ripe fruit so it doesn’t tear. Arrange the filled figs in a lightly buttered baking dish. Scatter roughly chopped walnuts over the tops, drizzle with honey, and season lightly with salt and pepper. Add a few small basil leaves.
Bake the figs. Preheat the oven to 350°F (177°C). Place the baking dish on the middle rack and bake for 5–10 minutes until the cheese is warm and the figs are tender. Watch closely so they don’t overcook.

Serve the figs. Serve immediately while warm, alongside slices of baguette. These pair nicely with a crisp white wine or a light sparkling option.
Recipe variations
- Cheese. If goat cheese isn’t to your taste, try ricotta, creamy feta, brie, or even cottage cheese for a milder option.
- Nuts. Swap walnuts for almonds, pecans or toasted seeds such as pumpkin or sunflower for different textures and flavors.
- Herbs. Mini basil is lovely, but rosemary or sage also pair well with figs and cheese.
- Make it sweeter. For an extra-sweet finish, sprinkle a little brown sugar or briefly broil to caramelize the tops—watch closely to avoid burning.
