This week on Desert Island Dishes our guest is Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall, the chef, broadcaster, food writer and campaigner known for his commitment to seasonal, ethical cooking and environmental causes.
Hugh first came to public attention in 1997 with his television series A Cook on the Wild Side, in which he explored country foraging and even sampled roadkill, demonstrating an adventurous approach to traditional food sources. A year later he launched the River Cottage series and books, filmed at the River Cottage estate on the Devon–Dorset border, which brought his philosophy of simple, homegrown cooking to a wider audience.
Across more than twenty cookery programmes, Hugh has combined practical recipes with investigations into pressing food and environmental issues. His documentaries have addressed topics such as obesity, the illegal wildlife trade, the pressures on fisheries and the environmental consequences of plastic. Those films reflect his long-standing dedication to sustainability and animal welfare, and have helped build a large, loyal following.
As a multi-award-winning author, Hugh has written numerous bestselling cookbooks that emphasise seasonality, ethical sourcing and straightforward techniques you can use at home. Many people will recognise his recipes from the River Cottage books and other titles, which encourage cooks to enjoy food that is both delicious and responsibly produced.
We’d also like to thank our season sponsor, Cooks Matches, for supporting the show. For recipes and culinary inspiration you can visit their website.
