We're planning and traveling to north for A Hypothetical Lobster Themed Week Trip to Rockland, Maine! Picking out places to stay, Lobster filled menu ideas for breakfast, lunch and dinner plus some fun Lobster adventures!

Maine has long been on my bucket list, and a lobster-themed trip is at the very top. I love lobster, though I don’t cook it often at home because it’s so expensive where I live. Still, it’s one of my favorite treats.

Inspired by previous hypothetical trip posts, I planned a lobster-packed week in and around Rockland, Maine. Summer is the ideal season for lobster, so this itinerary centers on a summer trip.

I’ve divided the plan into a few sections:

  • Where to stay
  • Where and what to eat
  • Things to do in Rockland
  • What to buy

Where I would stay for a lobster-themed week in Rockland, Maine

I usually pick a single lodging for these hypothetical trips, but this time I’m torn between two excellent sister properties I found in my research.

#1. Glen Cove Inn and Suites

This charming inn dates back to the 1920s and sits on over three acres with ocean-view walking and running trails. It has 36 rooms with patios or balconies and a range of bed sizes from double queens to kings. A heated outdoor pool is also available.

Amenities include:

  • Triple sheeting and cozy comforters
  • Mini refrigerator
  • Keurig coffee maker
  • Hairdryer
  • Complimentary Wi-Fi
  • Flat-screen TV with cable
  • Sitting area
  • Guest laundry area

They serve a “more-than-continental” breakfast offering homemade baked goods (bagels, muffins, scones, cinnamon rolls), hard-boiled eggs, fresh fruit, yogurt parfaits, make-your-own waffles with real maple syrup, hot and cold cereals, and a selection of coffees, teas, and juices.

Rates: Vary by date; roughly $200 per night.

Location: 866 Commercial St, Rockport, ME 04856

#2. The Country Inn

The Country Inn offers 36 main-house rooms and suites year-round and 11 seasonal cottages (May–October). All rooms are non-smoking with private baths and patios or balconies. Rooms include natural soaps and toiletries, Wi-Fi, refrigerator, microwave, hairdryer, iron, flat-screen TV, and free parking. The property also has a pool, hot tub, fitness center, library, ice machines, an electric car charger, and coin laundry.

Their “better-than-continental” breakfast buffet features yogurt parfaits, freshly made breakfast sandwiches, seasonal fruit, make-your-own waffles, fresh-baked muffins, scones, cinnamon rolls, and cereals.

Rates: Vary by date; roughly $220 per night.

Location: 8 Country Inn Way, Rockport, ME 04856

If it’s a lobster week, expect plenty of lobster dishes. Here are a few spots I’d try in Rockland.

#1. CLAWS

  • Lobster Rangoon “LEGS” — lobster meat with creamy cheese in a fried wonton, served with dipping sauces

  • Lazy Lobster Dinner — sautéed lobster meat in butter with corn on the cob, coleslaw, and a blueberry biscuit
  • Lobster Mac ‘n’ Cheese
  • Lobster Roll

An old-school diner atmosphere serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Lobster items that caught my eye:

What I would do in Rockland for a lobster-themed week

Here are activities and experiences I’d include in a lobster-focused visit to Rockland.

#1. The Maine Lobster Festival

Location: Harbor Park – 1 Pleasant St, Rockland, ME 04841

I’d plan the trip for early August to coincide with the Maine Lobster Festival. The multi-day event features food tents focused on lobster dishes, a seafood cooking contest, a Marine Experience tent with hands-on marine life activities, parades, live music, arts and crafts, and children’s events like a children’s parade, cod fish carry race, kids-only lobster eating contest, and even a Little Lobster Diaper Derby.

#2. Jess’s Market

Address: 118 Main St, Rockland, ME 04841

Jess’s Market sells fresh local seafood and live lobsters from Penobscot Bay and nearby islands. If I had access to a kitchen, I’d buy live lobsters to cook. They can package lobsters to survive up to 24 hours of travel, which is handy for bringing them home.

Lobsters ready for transport

#3. Camden Harbor Cruises — Lobster Tour

Address: 15 Public Landing, Camden, ME 04843

About a 15-minute drive from Rockland, Camden Harbor Cruises offers lobster-related tours like an Eco-Tour with a lobstering demonstration, a Lobstering & Lighthouse Cruise, and a Morning Lobster Haul. These tours demonstrate how lobster traps are baited and hauled and include local history and wildlife viewing.

#4. Archipelago (shopping)

Address: 386 Main St, Rockland, ME 04841

This Main Street shop showcases Maine-made art and goods. I’d look for lobster cookbooks, lobster-themed plates and signs, and other locally made lobster gifts.

#5. Puffin’s Nest (shopping)

Address: 464 Main St, Rockland, ME 04841

A nautical-themed gift shop with playful lobster items like mugs, pillows, vintage taffy boxes, and stuffed lobster toys—great for souvenirs.

#6. Birch Point Beach State Park

Location: Birch Point Beach Road, off Route 73 south of Owl’s Head, about 15 minutes south of Rockland (Lat 44.039583 / Lon -69.097573)

Though not lobster-related, a beach stop is a must in Maine. Birch Point is a small, scenic spot ideal for a picnic; there’s a modest entry fee but it’s a lovely place to relax.

#7. Main Street Markets

Address: 435 Main St, Rockland, ME 04841

A local market with Maine-themed products, snacks, and drinks. They carry local items like canned wine from Blue Lobster Urban Winery, keeping the lobster theme going in a fun way.

#8. Rockland Ferry Service to Vinalhaven Island

(Day trip idea: lobster roll on the island)

I discovered the ferry while exploring the area on a map. The ferry ride to Vinalhaven is about 1 hour 15 minutes. Prices vary by season. The island looks peaceful and perfect for a day trip; I’d rent bikes and explore.
