This papaya mandarin rum cocktail is a delightful refresher for warm evenings. It blends ripe papaya and fresh mandarin juice with rum and a few complementary ingredients. A thin slice of jalapeño adds a bright, spicy note that balances the natural sweetness. You can also enjoy it as a mocktail—omit the rum and keep the same bright flavor profile.
Visiting the farmer’s market on Saturday mornings is one of my favorite rituals as spring approaches. Citrus is everywhere this season, so combining papaya and mandarins in a shaker felt like an obvious choice. The result is a light, tropical cocktail that’s easy to make and full of fresh flavor.

Growing up in West Africa, papaya—often called pawpaw in Nigeria—was a popular snack. I loved it when it was almost ripe for its firmer, slightly crunchy texture, similar to cantaloupe. A sprinkle of sea salt on slices of papaya is a simple treat that wakes up the fruit’s flavor.
WHAT IS PAPAYA (pawpaw, papaw)?
Papaya (Carica papaya) is a tropical fruit that originated in regions such as Mexico, the Caribbean, and northern South America. The fruit is typically oval and becomes sweetest when soft to the touch. The skin transitions from green to orange as it ripens, and the center contains glossy black seeds. Although sometimes confused with the pawpaw, they are distinct fruits.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF PAPAYA
Papaya is naturally sweet and versatile. Beyond its delicious flavor, it’s a nutritional powerhouse rich in potassium, vitamins (including vitamin C and vitamin A precursors), folate, fiber, and antioxidants. It also provides essential fatty acids that support heart and brain health.
HOW TO USE PAPAYA

Papaya works well in many preparations. Try it in:
- Spicy papaya chips
- Papaya ice cream, sherbet, or sorbet
- Papaya yogurt parfaits
- Fruit salads
- Porridges with other fruits
- Papaya popsicles
- Smoothie bowls
- Candied papaya
- Homemade face masks for skincare benefits
- Fresh juice or a papaya cocktail
- Baked goods like cake
Below are the ingredients and method to make this papaya mandarin rum cocktail.

Ingredients
The recipe card below includes exact measurements for two servings.
- Fresh papaya puree
- Ice
- Rum (dark rum recommended)
- Mandarin juice
- Angostura orange bitters
- Freshly squeezed lime juice
- Agave nectar syrup
- Thin slice of jalapeño (seeded if you prefer less heat)
- Tonic water, to top
To make the papaya puree, pulse about 3 cups of chopped papaya with 1/4 to 1/2 cup of water in a blender until smooth, then set aside.
Add ice to a cocktail shaker, then pour in the papaya puree, rum, mandarin juice, Angostura orange bitters, lime juice, and agave syrup. Shake vigorously to chill and combine the flavors.
Add the jalapeño slice and shake briefly one more time—don’t overdo it unless you want a strong peppery kick. Strain into coupe glasses or pour over ice if you prefer a long drink. Top with tonic water to add a bright, slightly bitter lift.

Garnish with mandarin wedges, papaya balls, lime wedges, or an extra jalapeño slice for presentation. Dress it up to match the mood—you just earned it after all that shaking. Sip responsibly and enjoy.
PEACE & LOVE
